جشنواره دانشجویی و مردمی تئاتر ثمر از سال ۱۳۹۰ به منظور حمایت از گروه های دانشجویی تئاتر توسط محمد رضا ژیان مدرس بازیگری و کارگردانی تئاتر فعالیت حرفه ای خود را آغاز کرد.
در طی این سالها جشنواره تئاتر ثمر به صورت مستقل و در بخش خصوصی بدون هیچ حمایت مالی دولتی و ارگانی توانسته است هشت دوره خود را هرچه باشکوهتر از دوره قبل برگزار کند و نقش بسزایی در رشد کیفی تئاتر دانشگاهی و دانشجویی در میان اکثریت دانشجویان تئاتر داشته باشد.
